GOVERNMENT NEWS Governor Rendell Wednesday revised his July 8 executive order extending the operations of the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4). Under the revised order, the council will remain in operation through June 30, 2009, or until the General Assembly reauthorizes the council, whichever occurs first.

AROUND THE NATION Special Agent Samuel Hicks, assigned to the Pittsburgh FBI Office, was fatally shot today while executing a federal search warrant associated with a drug distribution ring. One suspect is in custody and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is being conducted. Former New Jersey State Senator Wayne R. Bryant was convicted on all corruption charges against him for unlawfully using his power and influence to obtain a paid, low-show job at UMDNJ’s School of Osteopathic Medicine in exchange for lobbying and bringing millions of dollars in extra funding to the school, and using that job and others to fraudulently nearly triple his state pension.
